Applied typography 9: Japan Typography Association
The japan lettering yearbook was first published in 1969, and by 1974 was renamed the applied typography yearbook. In 1991, it became an annual publication and this year marks its 20th issue. Throughout its history, the yearbook has featured special sections including dialogues, interviews, and explorations of art and lettering, as well as discussions on the history of kanji, lettering, and information culture. This year's edition focuses on the unique designs found in traditional matsuri festivals, which have been disappearing from modern city life. These designs, some dating back 700 years, provide insight into the changes in typography and societal climate over the past 30 years. Some of these designs have remained unchanged for centuries, rooted in the human psyche.
